Breakfast is often referred to as being the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is the first meal you will consume after being in a fasted state for around 10 – 12 hours on average, hence the name Break-Fast. Although there are a number of potential benefits associated with fasting, going for prolonged periods of time without consuming any food or drink is never a good idea. Because of this, consuming breakfast each morning is considered to be very important, yet more than 1 in 2 people still admit to skipping breakfast at least 3 times per week, with many missing it more often than that.
Forget about greasy fried bacon, sugary syrups, and buttermilk pancakes, as ideally you should have a healthy and balanced breakfast each morning. Still not convinced? Then take a look at the following reasons why you should never skip breakfast.
1. Skipping breakfast can lead to weight gain
Ironically, one of the main reasons why so many people choose to skip breakfast on a regular basis is down to the fact that they think it will help them to lose weight. In reality however, skipping breakfast can have the exact opposite effect and can lead to weight gain. You see, by skipping breakfast, you are failing to fuel your metabolism, which has already been lacking energy for several hours while you've been sleeping. This slows the metabolism, meaning that you burn less calories so that you find it tougher to lose weight and easier to gain weight.
2. You will have less energy
As mentioned, one of the main downsides associated with skipping breakfast is the fact that it can suppress the metabolism and slow it down. The human metabolism is responsible for taking calories stored in food and in body fat, and converting them into glucose which the body uses as a primary energy source. By eating breakfast, you are fuelling your body and giving it the energy it has been lacking for several hours. Failing to do so will leave you feeling tired, sluggish, and lethargic, which is hardly how anybody wants to be feeling.
3. Breakfast boosts mental alertness
Not only does eating a healthy and balanced breakfast provide energy for the body, it also provides energy for the brain, helping to increase mental clarity and alertness. A number of breakfast foods, especially those rich in healthy fats, amino acids, and vitamins and minerals, have been proven to provide a boost to the brain, helping to enhance cognitive function, mental clarity, and mental focus. Put simply, eating breakfast will help you to concentrate and focus better, plus it will make you more alert.
4. Less hunger throughout the day
Skipping breakfast means that you'll become much hungrier throughout the day, because it could potentially have been 12 – 14 hours since you last ate when you do finally eat. The longer you go without food, the hungrier you become. Being hungry can put you in a bad mood, leave you feeling tired, unwell, and could cause you to make poor dietary choices.
5. You will make poor food choices
Eating a well-balanced breakfast in the morning will help you stabilise your blood glucose levels throughout the day. When you skip breakfast, your body will naturally crave quick releasing high sugar foods like sweets and chocolate, which then causes your blood glucose levels to spike and fall sharply. This leads you to crave quick releasing high sugar foods again, and so the cycle continues throughout the day. Start the day right and you'll find it much easier to make healthier food choices throughout the day.
